Presented by Beijing 55 international High School's Carbon Neutrality Club
The world was forever transformed by the awe-inspiring force of the Industrial Revolution. As the gears of progress turned, a wave of innovation and industrialization swept across the globe, fueled by the fiery embrace of fossil fuels. The triumphant dance of coal, oil, and gas set the stage for an unprecedented era of human achievement. Yet, hidden amidst the triumphs, a silent storm was brewing. With each ravenous flame that consumed these ancient remnants of the Earth's history, a cascade of greenhouse gases was released into the very fabric of our atmosphere. Like a symphony of carbon and oxygen, these gases wove a tale of rising temperatures and shifting climates, forever altering the delicate balance of our planet. The Industrial Revolution had unwittingly ignited a planetary drama, where the stage was set for the greatest challenge of our time – the battle to tame the roaring beast of climate change......
After the Industrial Revolution, the amount of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere began increasing rapidly due to industrialization involving the burning of fossil fuels, oil and gas for energy.
The amount of greenhouse gases has increased over the last centuries, directly affecting the climate on Earth and contributing to global warming. If we don't react appropriately to this pressing issue, the toll will be the extinction of humankind.
Global warming will lead to problems that none of us would ever want to see...
Desertification, land getting stripped of vegetation and its wildlife disappearing are consequences of global warming. It will result in the loss of arable land for agriculture as well as biodiversity on Earth.
The melting of icebergs in the North and South poles due to the increase in temperature will contribute to the rise of sea levels, posing a threat to human civilization.
Warmer springs, longer summers, and drier seasons caused by global warming can contribute to the frequency of wildfires occurring.
Respiratory issues, community displacement, social unrest, conflicts, increasing costs for infrastructure repair and maintenance, supply chain disruption...
In order to stop climate change, decrease the rate of global temperature rise, and prevent more issues from occuring, carbon neutrality must be achieved!
"HOLD ON! What is Carbon Neutrality!?"
Carbon neutrality: what is it? The European Parliament states that when the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere equals the amount "removed". A balance—also referred to as a zero carbon footprint—is now... established...
So, what can we do to achieve Carbon Neutrality,
and what can we do to combat Global Warming?
Plant Trees and Support Green Spaces
Do you know that trees absorb carbon dioxide and help combat climate change? Participate in tree-planting events! Those help a lot.
Promote Sustainable Food Choices
Choose locally sourced, organic, and plant-based foods. Reduce meat consumption and support sustainable farming practices. Also, don't waste food!
Choose Sustainable Transportation
Choose walking, cycling, or using public transportation whenever possible. You can also try electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions!
Reduce Energy Consumption
Conserve energy by turning off lights, unplugging electronics when not in use, and using energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs.
Stay informed about climate change and try to understand its causes, impacts, and solutions. Share your knowledge about climate change with friends, family, and classmates. Encourage them to take action too!
